Autumn Colors in Colorado

Autumn Colors in Colorado

The changing of the seasons and Mother Nature’s annual color show is upon us here in Colorado. While I missed almost 2 weeks because of travel commitments, there was still plenty to find on returning. Here are a few captures so far. More to come.

Lens Evaluation

Tamron 150-600mm Lens Evaluation

I have been looking at this lens for over a year now and finally rented one thru LensRental.com for a week to put it thru its paces. So far, all my shooting has been handheld and I have had mixed results, probably because of my newness to it. I have been shooting on auto focus so far (tomorrow is tripod day) and the fine focus has been giving me problems on ariel shots. I need to pay more attention to that or switch to manual and lock at infinity and shoot away.

Anyway, here are some of the better ones from my first full day out with this lens.

Morning Colors in Roxborough Park

Pink Skies of Roxborough Park

Some morning I awaken to a glow in the room from the morning light through a skylight. Today was one of those and I know, I have about 5 minutes to try and capture the fleeting colors. Today was with the new Nexus 5X cellphone. The images are unfiltered or altered. The beauty we continually see here astounds me.

Colorado Camping

Colorado Camping

I took a few days to explore a bit of south central Colorado. My destination was Westcliffe, Co because of its “dark sky” designation and the lunar calendar for the week – new moon time! The objective was to try out some new gear and get some Milky Way shots in a dark sky environment.

There was a slight detour as an old kidney stone decided to travel also on the ride down. Ended up back in Pueblo for a quick ER visit (Thanks St Mary’s for good, prompt treatment). Rather than head back to Westcliffe, I checked into the campground at Lake Pueblo. The overcast skies cleared enough around 1:00am to grab a few shots.

The next morning I headed for the mountains and after a bit of exploring settled on Lake DeWeese as a campsite (free). Waterside, picnic tables, and easily accessible. The late afternoon and early evening rain caused some concern about shooting that night. Waking up around 3:00am found enough clear skies to capture a few images. Not the spectacular ones I had in mind, but worth the effort.

Trail Ridge Road Cruise

Trail Ridge Road

Trial Ridge Road opened a bit later this year as a result of the late spring snows. But once opened the views were as spectacular as always. While I did not do the whole length this trip, I did spend some time exploring Lake Granby and Monarch Lakes just outside of the park. Definitely added to my list of places to camp, sooner rather than later.

Once into RMNP, the elk were out and enjoying the afternoon sun. It amazed my the number of tourists that closely approached them for a good picture. And the marmots were out at the top, and largely ignored.

Bighorns Playing

Bighorn Playday!

The bighorns were quite active today in Waterton Canyon. The young ones were racing up and down the trail, and scampering up the mountainside. Some were leaping and twisting in the air. Here are a few early images. More may follow.
