In close proximity to Denver there are a variety of sites where wildlife can be viewed in natural or protected habitats. All the sites shown below are within 45 minutes of downtown Denver.

Lens Evaluation

Tamron 150-600mm Lens Evaluation

I have been looking at this lens for over a year now and finally rented one thru LensRental.com for a week to put it thru its paces. So far, all my shooting has been handheld and I have had mixed results, probably because of my newness to it. I have been shooting on auto focus so far (tomorrow is tripod day) and the fine focus has been giving me problems on ariel shots. I need to pay more attention to that or switch to manual and lock at infinity and shoot away.

Anyway, here are some of the better ones from my first full day out with this lens.

Local Wildlife

Went out exploring today, looking to find a few raptors or other interesting critters. I managed to capture a few images from Cherry Creek State ParkRocky Mountain National Arsenal, and Chatfield State Park.

Trail Ridge Road Cruise

Trail Ridge Road

Trial Ridge Road opened a bit later this year as a result of the late spring snows. But once opened the views were as spectacular as always. While I did not do the whole length this trip, I did spend some time exploring Lake Granby and Monarch Lakes just outside of the park. Definitely added to my list of places to camp, sooner rather than later.

Once into RMNP, the elk were out and enjoying the afternoon sun. It amazed my the number of tourists that closely approached them for a good picture. And the marmots were out at the top, and largely ignored.

Spring in Roxborough Park

The birds are starting to fill the air here in Roxborough. And, fighting the spring snows a bit, the flora is starting to assert itself. Today we had 4″ of fresh snow in the morning and 60+ temperatures in the afternoon. Gotta love a Colorado Spring!

Cherry Creek State Park

Bald Eagles & More

First visit to CCSP today. I came away with a severe case of lens envy! Nevertheless, I did manage to get a few Balds perched. I am guessing the dark one is an immature bald based on the claws and coloring. Corrections welcome!

Lake Chatfield Hawks

Red Tail Hawks

Many thanks to the FB group Front Range Wildlife Photographers for their patience in helping me identify these as immature Red Tail Hawks. The significant characteristics are the naked tarsus, chest banding, striped tail, and the dark patch on the leading edge of the wing. Again, the location for these sightings was Lake Chatfield State Park. Click through on an image for a full size complete with EXIF data.

The geese are just for fun. Their take off over the fields against the Colorado blue sky struck me. While a common site around here, I still enjoy the view.Tony Lazzari, Photographer

Eagle Flight

Sometimes you skip over an image when reviewing the days captures, then something draws you back to a particular one. The coloring and position of this majestic bird seemed to call for more attention. A bit of Lightroom and PSCC touch up and cropping yielded this. Comments appreciated.

Raptors

Raptors near Roxborough Park

Images from Lake Chatfield and northwest Douglas County, southwest of Denver Colorado. I am still learning to id the various raptors and am very grateful to the folks over at Front Range Wildlife Photographers on FB.They are very generous in sharing their expertise.

It’s Not Bullwinkle….

I was out this afternoon hoping got catch something live up Guanella Pass. A car going by when I was shooting stopped and asked if I was going all the way over as there was a moose off in the fields….Guess who I found way back off the road!

Bighorns Playing

Bighorn Playday!

The bighorns were quite active today in Waterton Canyon. The young ones were racing up and down the trail, and scampering up the mountainside. Some were leaping and twisting in the air. Here are a few early images. More may follow.

On Eagles Wings

I had been hearing about a nested pair of eagles who had returned to their spot north of Denver, so I took a drive up there to view the baby eaglet that I had seen in a few images. She was proudly perched on the edge of the next and even flexed her wings a bit hopping from side to side. More images and videos can we seen on The Raptor Education Foundation Facebook page.
